Random thoughts from San Diego's 20-14 home loss to Seattle on Saturday night:
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson and linebacker Shawne Merriman didn't do anything spectacular Saturday night. But that's not the point. The two players, coming off injuries, got some good work in and are on schedule to be at full strength when the Chargers open the regular season Sept. 14 at Oakland. That's the whole point of the preseason.
Another player coming off an injury, tight end Antonio Gates, was impressive. He had three catches. Gates is expecting to have a big year. He said he immersed himself in the mental aspect of the game while he was injured last season and he feels like his game has balance it never had before.
Injury prone 2007 top pick, receiver Buster Davis, had a nice game. He had three catches for 64 yards. Davis in very talented. If he can stay healthy, he will give San Diego a big boost.
Free-agent pickup Kevin Burnett showed he may be a spark plug. The inside linebacker had a team high six tackles.
The Chargers' chief concern this year is improving the pass defense. It appeared to play well Saturday night. It held Seattle to 158 passing yards.
