SAN DIEGO -- Takeo Spikes is not going to allow himself to get too excited.

He learned that a few years back. He likes what he sees in his first 10 days as a San Diego Charger, but he is not ready to make any proclamations that this is finally the year. The inside linebacker is entering his 14th season. He has never been to the postseason.

“I’ve learned not to take anything for granted,” Spikes said after Monday night’s practice. “I am going to wait and see. I’ve seen it all. I’ve been 4-0 in the preseason. I’ve been 0-4 in the preseason and every split in between. I’m just going to wait and see what happens.”

Spikes was added to the No. 1 ranked defense and he is expected to give major veteran leadership. He reunites with former San Francisco defensive coordinator Greg Manusky who is now the Chargers’ defensive coordinator. Spikes had 109 tackles last season in San Francisco. He is ready to make a similar contribution for the Chargers.

“You got to go earn it,” Spikes said. “Nothing is given to you in camp. We have to go get it.”

Spikes will allow himself to admit that he does like the feel of this team.

“Guys care,” Spikes said. “That’s great to see.”
