It’s not the estimated two weeks that Oakland superstar cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is going to miss with chipped bones in his wrist that is the worry.
It’s how Asomugha is going to play once he returns that concerns the Raiders.
Essentially, Asomugha shouldn’t miss any game time. He wasn’t going to play in Oakland’s preseason finale Thursday in Seattle, anyway. Thus, he should be ready to play Sept. 14 against visiting San Diego in the season opener. Of course, he may not get much practice time before that game. But unless there is a setback, expect to see the shutdown left cornerback on the field against the Chargers.
But how effective will Asomugha be once he returns? If the wrist is not completely healed, Asomugha could be hampered. Asomugha uses his hands extensively in both his bump-and-run style and in defending the actual pass. If Asomugha is not at full strength, it could be a problem.
Look, this is a fantastic player and Asomugha should be able to work through it and perform at a more-than-acceptable level even if he’s not at full strength. But when Asomugha is at full strength, he is nearly impossible to throw against. Oakland needs to get this superior talent completely healthy as soon as possible.
