AFC West notes: Croyle to start Thursday

The Chiefs are starting Brodie Croyle in their preseason finale. Does this have any significance for the regular season?

Hard to tell. If Matt Cassel can’t play in the season opener Sept. 13 at Baltimore, Croyle or Tyler Thigpen will play for him. Croyle had been the No. 2 quarterback, but there have been rumblings that Thigpen would start if Cassel can’t play. We will see, but Croyle can help his cause Thursday.

Oakland star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha vows to be ready to play in the season opener Sept. 14 against the Chargers. The only question is if his injured wrist will cooperate in his first game back.

The Chargers announced that their home preseason finale against San Francisco on Friday will be blacked out on local television because the game is not a sellout.

New San Diego defensive lineman Travis Johnson, who was acquired from Houston on Monday for a future draft choice, will not play Friday. But the team expects him to be ready for the season opener.

The Broncos are going to be more expansive to the media in reporting in-game injuries.
