I arrived in Kansas City for the Chargers-Chiefs game to expected news –- the Denver Broncos will stick with Tim Tebow as their starting quarterback in Week 9 at Oakland.
I would have been shocked if the Broncos made another decision.
However, there‘s no doubt Tebow’s leash will not be long. He has played poorly in two starts with little, if any improvement shown. The 2-5 Broncos will likely pull the plug on Tebow early if he doesn’t show marked improvements soon.
Denver coach John Fox said Tebow must improve as a pocket passer to keep his job. Tebow has struggled mightily in that area.
“We’re getting to know him better, and he’s getting to understand the offense better with each one of those snaps,” Fox said. “I think at the end of the day, we get to see if he can improve and get better in the passing game.”
Denver’s top football decision maker, hall of fame quarterback John Elway, was asked by a Denver radio station Monday if he thinks if Tebow may benefit from going back to the bench. The interview was before Fox made the announcement Tebow will play. Elway said the entire team needs to improve.
“I don’t know,” Elway said. “Again, I haven’t seen the film yet; I’ll get to that when I’m done with you guys. But we’ll look at it and see what we can do. I think the bottom line is we have to play better as a football team, so not only at the quarterback position do we have to play better, we have to play better up front. We gave up 24 points by halftime and we gave up 31 total defensively, so we’ve got to do better on the defensive side also.”
Still, if Tebow doesn’t give Denver a chance at the most important position on the field, I’m sure a change – Denver would likely give Brady Quinn a chance – could be made.
Meanwhile, here are some reactions to the Tebow situation:
An Insider piece looks at why Tebow is better in the fourth quarter of games.
An unnamed Detroit defender was clearly not impressed by Tebow.
Athlonsports.com points out there is hope for Tebow, based on Elway’s struggles early in his career. Here’s the difference: Elway came into the league as a prime pocket-passing prospect. Tebow still has to learn the fundamentals of being an NFL quarterback.
