According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Denver coach Josh McDaniels came close to saying quarterback Kyle Orton will be ready to play Sunday at Cincinnati.
Orton suffered an index finger injury on his throwing hand Aug. 30 against Chicago. Orton has been practicing this week. McDaniels said Thursday he is “hopeful” that Orton will play Sunday in the season opener and that Orton has looked good in practice this week.
If Orton suffers a setback, backup Chris Simms will play. Simms is coming off a high ankle sprain that he suffered Aug. 22.
Meanwhile, in a surprise, McDaniels said receiver Jabar Gaffney could return Sunday. He broke his thumb in August. He was expected to be out longer.
