Mid-week mail call:

Mike from Kansas City wants to know if the Chiefs will rebound defensively against Oakland.

Bill Williamson: Kansas City needs tightens up on defense, especially against the pass. Baltimore had its way with Kansas City’s defense in its 3-4 debut. The Chiefs were excited going into the regular season after productive preseason. But they still have plenty of issues to clear up. The biggest problem remains a lack of pass rush. Kansas City had one sack against the Ravens after setting an NFL record for the fewest sacks in a season with 10 last year. The season is not lost, but the Chiefs have to improve as it prepares for Oakland on Sunday.

Joe from Parker, Co. wants to know if Kyle Orton impressed at Cincinnati.

BW: Well, he got the win, so it’s something, but Orton didn’t do much against the Broncos until the final play, and that play was made by Brandon Stokley. Truthfully, Orton should have been intercepted on the play. But he got the win. If Orton continues to learn how to manage games in Josh McDaniels’ system, he could be fine. But I don’t think he will ever be great.

J. Valenti from Manchester, MA. wants to know if New England should have treated Richard Seymour better when he was traded to the Raiders.

BW: I think so, yes. Look, the Patriots can do whatever they want with their players and they don’t owe Seymour anything. But his departure was very cold. This is a player who was a big part for the Patriots’ Super Bowl years. You would think the timing would have been better. Seymour was quoted as saying New England coach Bill Belichick was very direct and short when he informed him of the trade. This could eventually come back to bite the Patriots. Players want to be treated well and stories like this could end up keeping free agents form going to New England if they are worried about their security.
