Nearly every candidate named so far for the Oakland job has Green Bay ties to new Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie. There are sure other names to emerge, especially if the Packers take a long playoff run.
What about the big available name? What about Jeff Fisher?
I’m sure McKenzie would be more than open to the idea of attracting Fisher. He is the catch of the season and he would be bring legitimacy to any program. He has been talking to both St. Louis and Miami. However, the process has been unexpectedly dragging out.
Perhaps that's why the Raiders made the fast move to fire Hue Jackson. Maybe they’d like to put a package together for Fisher.
Yes, it could be a pipe dream for Oakland and it would cost more money than the Raiders are accustomed to paying for a coach and his staff. And time could be running out as Fisher may decide soon between the Rams and the Dolphins.
But McKenzie is a big thinker. Hiring Fisher would show the league that the Raiders are prepared to change their culture and become a premier franchise again. Will it happen? It may be a long shot, but pursuing Fisher would be an impressive way for McKenzie begin his Oakland tenure.
