Why Denver traded Holland

Montrae Holland ate himself out of Denver.

The Broncos dealt Holland Thursday to Dallas for a fifth-round pick in 2010. Holland, Denver's starting right guard last season, was set to be the starter again this season after a productive first year with the Broncos in 2007 in which he earned a two-year contract extension.

Yet, Holland showed up to training camp more than 20 pounds overweight. Denver coach Mike Shanahan wouldn't allow Holland to practice for the first couple of weeks of training camp. Holland's situation allowed third-year player Chris Kuper to take over in practice. Kuper took advantage and stole the job away from the dieting Holland.

In recent days, Denver decided they could move away from Holland altogether and started talking trade with Dallas.
