Is Matt Cassel in danger of losing his job as Kansas City's starting quarterback?

According to the Kansas City Star, Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel said there will be competition for Cassel. They kept it general, but it is clear that if Cassel is not ready to take the next step, the Chiefs would be willing to move on.

“We’ve been saying it for three years, and I’m going to continue to say it, because it’s a core part of our philosophy: There will be increased competition at every position, including the quarterback position,” Pioli told the paper. “Who that is, I don’t know. Maybe it’s Kyle (Orton), maybe it’s another free agent, maybe it’s a draft choice, I don’t know.”

This could just be talk, but it seems the Chiefs are more open to the idea of having a new quarterback than at during any time during Cassel’s stay in Kansas City. The Chiefs traded for Cassel in 2009.

Note, however, that Pioli didn’t mention 2011 fifth-round pick Ricky Stanzi. Stanzi will likely try to latch on as the backup after spending his rookie season as the No. 2 quarterback. Crennel is a big fan of Orton, so maybe the Chiefs will make a big run at him. Still, I don’t think he’d be interested in signing with the Chiefs unless he was told he’d be the likely starter.

Meanwhile, Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles took an important step in his recovery from a torn ACL he suffered in September.
