KANSAS CITY -- Here are some random notes and observations after the Chiefs' 21-17 win over St. Louis in the preseason finale for both teams. The two teams had to wait 85 minutes to end the preseason as the game was delayed by inclement weather. For their victory, the Chiefs were awarded the Governor's Cup in this heated battle of Missouri's finest.
- Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle on his team's offense: "We're not a bad offense. We weren't down on ourselves [after being blanked, 24-0, at Miami last week]. We came out here and gave ourselves a little bit of confidence. Hopefully, we got things going in the right direction."
- The Chiefs jumped out to a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter.
- The Chiefs didn't attempt any field goals on the final night of the battle to be the team's kicker. Connor Barth made two PATs and Nick Novak made one. What does it mean? We'll see soon. All we do know is Kansas City likes both Barth and Novak, who may have seen his lead shrink to Barth this week in practice.
- Chiefs stars Tony Gonzalez and Larry Johnson did not play.
- Middle linebacker Napoleon Harris, who started camp as the starting middle linebacker but who was replaced by Pat Thomas, was playing late in the game.
- The Chiefs only threw 12 passes in the game. Jeff Webb and Devard Darling who played alongside Dwayne Bowe didn't get any catches. The Chiefs are still looking for their No. 2 receiver. It may be fourth-round pick Will Franklin who will be back in 2-3 weeks after having knee surgery.
- B.J. Sams and Dantrell Savage both had nice nights in the final race for the return job. Sams had one punt return -- for 34 yards. Savage wasn't bad, though, as he had two punt returns for 26 yards, including a 19-yarder. Savage had a 40-yard kick return and Sams had a 30-yard kick return.
- Third-round pick DaJuan Morgan had some nice hits at safety and he had an interception in the fourth quarter. He looks like the real deal.
- The Chiefs spent the long delay grooving to tunes in the locker room.
- Damon Huard spelled Croyle after the first quarter and he completed both of his passes, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to receiver Bobby Sippio. Huard was then relieved by Tyler Thigpen who has been the Chiefs' No. 2 quarterback all camp. Some folks wouldn't be surprised if Huard, the team's former starter, is cut this weekend.
- Former Chiefs quarterback Trent Green played the first drive for St. Louis and led the team on a short field goal drive after the Rams recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff.
