Random thoughts from the final night of the preseason for Denver, Oakland and San Diego:
Denver
Anthony Alridge looks like he will be yet another undrafted rookie tailback who is in Denver's plans. Following in the footsteps of Mike Bell and Selvin Young, Alridge, a Houston product, had 110 yards on 23 carries against Arizona.
The Broncos run defense continued to show progress. Denver, which ranked 30th in run defense last season, allowed Arizona 32 yards rushing in the first half. The Broncos will be tested out of the chute when they face Oakland and San Diego the first two weeks. Both of those teams, of course, can run the rock.
Denver kicker Matt Prater, who replaces Broncos legend Jason Elam, hit two field goals and finished the preseason 9 of 11 in field goals.
Denver coach Mike Shanahan said center Tom Nalen could be out one to three more weeks after having his second knee surgery in two months last week.
Perhaps Keary Colbert saved his job with an 87-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
Oakland
Tackle Mario Henderson had a tough night at Seattle and could be in trouble. Oakland traded up to get him in the third round last year.
Darren McFadden finished the preseason in style as he had 50 yards on four carries. He is going to be fun to watch.
Fourth-round pick Arman Shields played in the preseason for the first time. He was a little rusty with two dropped passes.
San Diego
Backup quarterback Billy Volek is a fine player. He completed all six of his pass attempts at San Francisco.
Rookie running back Jacob Hester continued his fine preseason with 44 yards on 10 carries. He is going to help San Diego right away.
Receiver Malcolm Floyd continued to open eyes with six catches for 68 yards.
