We had a clear winner in our “You pick it” feature.

The readers believe the story of the week in the AFC West was Denver’s Elvis Dumervil getting four sacks against Cleveland on Sunday. The other candidates were San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers throwing for 436 yards and San Diego defensive tackle Jamal Williams being put on the injured reserve list with a triceps injury.

I think the story of the week was Williams being shelved for the season. That is a major loss for the Chargers and it could affect them all season. If there wasn’t such a long-term injury this week, I would have agreed with the Dumervil story. It was a tremendous effort.

So, it’s not a bad choice. Here are some of your responses. Thanks to everyone who responded:

Mason from Provo, Utah: Gotta be Doom racking 4 sacks in a game. Why? Because it was the first time this happened for a Bronco in 19 years. 1990 was when Simon Fletcher achieved that mark in the Orange and Blue.Phil Rivers sets a personal record? Big deal. Another big player lost for the season? Whoopee. This is every day stuff in the NFL. But team records aren't accomplished every day. And neither is a four-sack game.

Pete from Los Alamos, N.M.: Dumervil and the resurgent Denver defense has got to be the story of the week mostly becasue it so rare for a player to get 4 sacks. Combine that with the seeming resurrection of the Orange Crush after years of futility and there is reason to hope that this year may may be better than widely predicted. If the Broncos could only find a running game, they could surprise some teams.

Josh Lawall from Parker, Colo.: Elvis Dumervil receives my vote for a few reasons. The first is Dumervil tied the broncos record for sacks in a game but that doesn't do him justice. He did it in the second have against One of the more talented young Left tackles in the game in joe thomas. The second reason is that he is still adjusting to the 3-4 scheme and while it seems to be a more natural fit for him it is still only two weeks into the season and he is still adjusting. The Chargers lost but what phillips rivers did was impressive, however, They still lost i believe without ELvis the Broncos would have lost aswell. As for the injury it happens every year with some charger that is vitale to their success last year it was LT and merriman, The year before, Rivers for a part. And this year it is Williams. What elvis did was a feat getting injured is bad luck not a feat. So no matter which way you look at it Dumervil should win hands down because he met all the requirements.

Matt Slater from San Diego: Not even close this week, Bill. Jamal Williams is one of the greatest DTs of recent memory, and his being out for the year is bigger news than one guy's very good game (Dumervil) or very good stat in an otherwise OK game (Rivers). SD's suddenly-porous run defense won't kill their season, but it has already cost them one game, and it could easily be a difference-maker against teams like Miami and Denver. I still think they'll win their division, but now they have 14 games to sort this problem out, and if they fail it'll be yet another year with no ring.

Dan Holtman from Denver, Colo.: Its got to be Dumervil and the Broncos D. Granted they played both teams from Ohio, but lets not forget they held the Bengals to 0 points for 59 minutes and then the following week Carson Palmer and company went off on whats supposed to be a great D in Green Bay. A couple of those sacks were coverage sacks, so give credit to the secondary as well. Giving up only 13 points in two games is good against anybody, especially for a defense that was one of the worst the previous year.

Billy G.from Torrance, Calif.: Bill, definitely think the biggest story line is the loss of Jamal Williams for the season. This may end up hurting the Chargers more than missing Merriman last year because of Jamal's run stuffing abilities and the opposing line to double or even triple team him. Our LB's wont be able to roam around as much and instead of being a bad passing defense, teams will run at will against us. Last year time of possession was a concern, now its an even bigger concern because of lack of run D and our inability to run the ball.

Pete from Denver, Colo.: Bill,The story of the week has to be Elvis Dumervil and his 4 sacks. The new look 3-4 Denver D as a whole has been very impressive under Mike Nolan and Dumervil is thriving. Everywhere Nolan has coached he has improved the D. Also 2-0 is 2-0 no mater who you have played. If they take care of Oakland this weekend it might just give them the confidence they need heading into a very tough 8 game stretch.

Mark from the UK: Rivers throwing for a career high 436 yards is the story of the week, because the Chargers still lost. When one of the best QBs in the NFL throws for more yards than he ever has before and them to lose must mean there is something wrong in San Diego.

Enrique Alvardo from San Diego, Calif.: You Pick it: Rivers is a stud! Every game he plays it shows that the Chargers did the right thing in giving him a $92 million dollar pay day. Rivers has the heart and passion you want in your QB. He torched the Ravens and even though he almost pulled off the comeback he needs to get better play calling in crucial moments from Norv and the Defense needs to play with the same emotion Rivers does. Remember Defense wins championships!!
