It wasn’t an overly newsy week in the AFC West while I was out last week. Still, let’s review some of the things that happened:
Denver
The Broncos acquired fullback Chris Gronkowski from Indianapolis for cornerback Cassius Vaughn.
My take: When are the Broncos going to get the great Gronk? Two years ago, Denver traded for fullback/tight end Dan Gronkowski. Now they got Chris. The best Gronk brother, of course, is New England star tight end Rob Gronkowski. Chris Gronkowski is a player who has a chance to be a lead blocker in Denver in some instances, but I don’t think this is a high-impact move.
Kansas City
The Chiefs worked out former Dallas safety Abram Elam.
My take: The Chiefs clearly feel like they need a veteran safety for depth reasons. They have looked at several players in recent weeks. Elam has experience and would be a solid addition.
Tight end Dallas Clark signed with Tampa Bay. He had visited Kansas City.
My take: Seeing Clark sign elsewhere is no great loss for the Chiefs. They are deep at tight end and Clark is near the end of the road.
Oakland
Free-agent linebacker Quentin Groves signed with Arizona.
My take: Groves was no longer in Oakland’s plans, so it’s not a huge loss. Groves was a good locker-room presence in Oakland, but he wasn’t a strong performer.
