The investigation of Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable in Napa, Calif. has taken an important step.

The attorneys for Oakland defensive assistant Randy Hanson said his client told the Napa police department that he was assaulted and suffered a broken jaw in an attack by Oakland coach Tom Cable in an Aug. 5 incident at the team’s training camp site.

The is an incremental step that has been expected for several weeks. It does explain the delay in the investigation. The Napa police announced it would reopen the case on Aug. 21. Since then, police spokesmen have said on numerous occasions that the case is ongoing.

Now that Hanson has stated his side of the story, the Napa police can decide it wants to proceed with charges against Cable. He could face felony charges. Cable has maintained his innocence.Monday’s development cast more negativity on the Raiders, who are 1-2. The team was dominated at home by rival Denver, 23-3, on Sunday.
