I will be off for the next two weeks before we gear up for training camps when I return July 23.
It should be fairly quiet in the division while I’m away (our blog editors will post daily headlines in my absence). However, let’s look at some things that could occur while I am away.
The deadline for franchised players to sign an extension is July 16. If Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe and Oakland's Tyvon Branch do not sign extensions by then, they must wait to sign new deals after the season. Both players can be franchised again next year.
There were conflicting earlier reports that Branch could sign an extension after the July 16 deadline because he has already signed his tender. Yet, the league has explained the deadline extends to him as well. Bowe has not signed his tender. I’d be surprised if either player signs an extension by the deadline.
Five draft picks in the division remain unsigned. They are Kansas City’s Dontari Poe, Denver’s Brock Osweiler and Ronnie Hillman and Oakland’s Tony Bergstrom and Juron Criner. I’d be surprised if any of these players miss any training camp time. They all should sign in time for camp.
Have a good couple of weeks. Talk to you soon.
