U-T San Diego is reporting that Boller, a former Oakland backup, was signed to be a camp quarterback. San Diego coach Norv Turner said Friday that backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst strained his knee in Thursday’s first camp practice. He is expected to be out for a couple of weeks.
Thus, Boller is simply there for camp and depth. If Whitehurst’s injury, for some reason, becomes worse, perhaps former San Diego backup Billy Volek will be in the mix.
Meanwhile, left tackle Jared Gaither is fine after leaving practice Thursday. However, oft-injured linebacker Larry English missed Friday’s practice. This is a make-or-break season for the 2009 first-round pick.
In other AFC West news:
The Raiders signed third-round pick Tony Bergstrom on Friday. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Oakland's fifth-round pick, receiver Juron Criner -- the last unsigned draft pick in the AFC West -- is expected to sign by Sunday’s reporting date. I’d be shocked if Criner isn’t at Monday’s first practice. There is no reason for a fifth-round pick to hold out for even a minute.
Kyle Boller isn’t an inspired signing by the San Diego Chargers but there appears to be little chance he will be with the team during the regular season.
