Denver running back Correll Buckhalter is dealing with a high ankle sprain and he may be out for 1-2 weeks. Buckhalter was hurt Sunday against Dallas.
The Broncos will likely try to get Buckhalter ready to play Sunday against New England. But ankle sprains need time to heal. He had been playing very well. If Buckhalter can’t play, first-round pick Knowshon Moreno will likely get the start against the Patriots.
San Diego coach Norv Turner told reporters that there will be no dramatic changes by the team at its bye week this year. The Chargers are 2-2 after getting creamed by Pittsburgh on Sunday night. Last year, defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell was fired at the bye when the Chargers were 3-5. Ron Rivera took over for him. San Diego’s defense allowed 497 yards against the Steelers. But there is no way Rivera’s job is in jeopardy at this point.
The San Diego Union Tribune suggested nickel cornerback Antoine Cason could push Antonio Cormartie for a starting spot. That is a real possibility the way I hear it. The team loves Cason, the No. 1 pick in 2008, and Cromartie has not been impressive.
If the quarterback is late to meetings, that is an alarming sign. Russell has his problems on the field, but if he is being a distraction at headquarters, he could be on a short leash.
