Recap: It was quite a night in Denver as the Broncos stormed to a win to open the season. New quarterback Peyton Manning was excellent as he led Denver to a fourth-quarter win. Manning had a quarterback rating of 129.2 and he looked crisp in his first game since the 2010 playoffs. It wasn’t all Manning, though. This was a complete win for the team. It shined in every phase of the game.
Biggest area to fix: Third-down defense. The Steelers were 11-of-19 on third down, including some long conversions. At one point, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was 8-of-9 on third-down conversions while passing. The Steelers had the ball for virtually an entire quarter spanning the second and third quarters because of their ability to convert on third down.
Biggest area to build on: The big concern about Denver’s defense going into the season was over its ability to stop the run. It was outstanding Sunday night. The Steelers had just 75 yards on the ground on 26 carries.
What to watch for: The Broncos head to Atlanta in Week 2 to face the dangerous Falcons on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” The Falcons stomped Kansas City 40-2, on Sunday. This game has a chance to be high scoring with two fine offenses.
