NFL: Week 3 knee-jerk reactions
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 3
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | Uh oh, why didn't we dominate the Buccaneers? What's wrong with the offense? Is Jason Witten done? | The Cowboys have a lot going for them on offense and on defense, but the offensive line is a big enough problem that it could sink the season by itself. Tony Romo has no time to operate back there, and there are no holes for running back DeMarco Murray. |
![]() | Our front office is the greatest of all time! No one can touch our depth, and once the pass rush gets going there's no stopping our Super Bowl repeat train. | The Giants do have a deep, strong roster that can cover them in case of injuries, and they should take lots of pride in that. Eli Manning also deserves credit for consistently making those around him better. Huge test this week in Philadelphia. |
![]() | Same old garbage. Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg should be fired for that game plan. Michael Vick's going to get killed, and even if he doesn't, we'll never win with him at QB, because he can't read a defense and holds the ball too long. | Step back from the ledge, Eagles fans. They've played three bad games but managed to win two of them, and that counts for plenty. No one's getting fired or benched, because a winning record buys time to fix your problems. |
![]() | My goodness, our defense couldn't stop a parked car right now. We're going to have to score 40 points to win games. Too much pressure for RG3, who's also getting hit way too much back there. | This is all basically true. The injuries on defense have created an untenable situation in Washington. The good news is the Redskins are averaging 33 points per game so far, so not too far off that 40 number. |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | Kevin Kolb has officially arrived after saving the season opener and then going 2-0 as the Cardinals' starter. | Kolb completed all seven third-down attempts against the Eagles and hasn't thrown a pick all year. So far, though, he's been more about minimizing mistakes than carrying the team. |
![]() | The Vikings exposed Alex Smith as a game manager who lacks the ability to make winning plays when needed. | That's a little harsh. Smith had a rough game, but so did many of his teammates. Christian Ponder was actually the difference in the game. |
![]() | The Seahawks have the NFL's best defense after collecting eight first-half sacks against Green Bay on Monday night. | This defense is one of the best, no question, but it might not be the best one in the NFC West. San Francisco and Arizona will have something to say about that. |
![]() | The Rams showed their true colors against the Bears. Sam Bradford looked like a bust. | No way. This was a tough game for the Rams and they do have issues on their offensive line in particular, but that doesn't nullify the clear progress this team and Bradford have shown in 2012. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | Jay Cutler and the Bears' offense have struggled through two consecutive games. It's looks nothing close to the explosive scheme we were promised. | The Bears' offense didn't play well in the early parts of both the 2010 and 2011 seasons under former coordinator Mike Martz. Maybe it needs cold weather to succeed. |
![]() | The Lions are the same undisciplined, helter-skelter team that we saw in 2011. They make too many mistakes to be a championship contender. | It's a reasonable sentiment, especially if they're not going to be able to hit the same number of miracle comebacks as they did last season. |
![]() | The Packers' season was doomed by replacement officials Monday night. They're 1-2 in a tough division and conference. | If they're 1-2, that means there are 13 games to play. But we'll see whether their loss to the Seattle Seahawks, an NFC opponent, affects their position in playoff tiebreakers in a few months. |
![]() | Quarterback Christian Ponder is the real deal after outplaying the vaunted San Francisco 49ers defense. | It's a little early for that conclusion, but there is a lot more confidence in this team's quarterback situation than there was four weeks ago. |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yaskinskas | ||
![]() | They're piling up victories against good teams and even winning outdoor games. There's no way the Falcons lose a game this season and that includes the postseason. | The Falcons certainly are off to a great start and are loaded with talent. But they have to win at least two playoff games before they get to the Super Bowl, and this team hasn't won many postseason games lately. |
![]() | This team's going nowhere. After that embarrassing loss to the Giants, the playoffs are out of the question. | I'm not ready to write off Carolina just yet. There is talent on both sides of the ball and this thing still can be turned around. Besides, someone in the NFC South beyond the Falcons, is bound to win some games. |
![]() | The season is over. There's no way the Saints can come back from an 0-3 start and make the playoffs. Blame it all on Roger Goodell because that's what New Orleans fans do. | It's probably true. The Saints are heading to Lambeau Field on Sunday. Barring a miracle, they're going to start 0-4. And Goodell's not the only one to blame for this fiasco. |
![]() | Josh Freeman isn't the franchise quarterback for the Bucs. You know that thought has been out there and it's probably gaining ground right now. | That could end up happening. But give this kid a little more time with his new coaches before writing him off. Freeman has great physical talent, and it would be a shame to give up on him just yet. |
NFC Knee-jerk Reactions | AFC Knee-jerk Reactions
WEEK 3
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| AFC EAST by James Walker | ||
![]() | RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) is hurt and the offense will come apart at the seams. Spiller was all Buffalo had. | This is an overreaction. Remember, Spiller was a backup to start the season. Fred Jackson is capable of filling in and expects to play this weekend. |
![]() | Miami suffered a heartbreaking, overtime loss to its biggest rival. The Dolphins won't recover emotionally. | Not so fast. It was an emotional loss, but the Dolphins will still play hard. If Miami continues to lose, it will be because of talent, not emotion. |
![]() | The sky is falling on the Patriots. They are 1-2 and no longer a threat in the AFC. | This is not a valid knee-jerk reaction. The Patriots aren't going 16-0, but they won't be 8-8 either. New England will get it together and string some wins together soon enough. |
![]() | Darrelle Revis (knee) is done and so are the Jets. Stick a fork in them. | Yes, this is real. Revis affects the entire dynamic of the Jets, and this team won't recover. I would be shocked if they make the playoffs. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | The Broncos are just not good enough to hang with the big boys of the NFL after losing to the undefeated Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans in the past two weeks. | Well, that is the reality right now. The Broncos didn't make enough plays and they fell behind in both games. They are inferior to the top teams in the league after three games. |
![]() | Running back Jamaal Charles is at the top of his game. He ran for 233 yards in his third game back from a torn ACL. | Yes, he is back. Charles couldn't dominate like he did if he wasn't. Now, that doesn't mean he is going to break off 200 yards a game. The Chiefs will be careful with him, but he showed his explosiveness has returned. |
![]() | The Greg Knapp offense is a success in Oakland. The Raiders scored 34 points in a win over Pittsburgh and were successful in the running and passing games. | We have to see whether the Raiders can keep it up. But if it Knapp's offense was a lost cause, the Raiders wouldn't have scored 34. Oakland showed it can be successful on offense under Knapp after a bad first two games. |
![]() | The Chargers are a fraud. After starting 2-0, they were blasted by Atlanta, 27-3, at home. | Look, it was a bad day for San Diego. There is not much to positive to point to. The Falcons was the best team the Chargers who were impressive as they started 2-0 -- have played, and San Diego was completely manhandled. Until the Chargers beat an upper-level team, they will be reminded of Week 3. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens are the best team in the AFC. Their comeback win over the Patriots proves that. | Don't start booking your Super Bowl flight just yet. Routing Cincinnati and rallying to beat New England certainly make the Ravens one of the power players in the conference. But the undefeated Texans are the best team in the AFC, and perhaps the entire NFL, right now. |
![]() | The Bengals are unstoppable on offense. A.J. Green is the best wide receiver in the league. | Green is starting to climb into the Calvin Johnson level of NFL wide receivers. Not sure whether the Bengals' offense is that good or the defenses have been that bad. The Bengals offense should put up big numbers the next three games against Jacksonville (No. 28 in defense), Miami (No. 22) and Cleveland (No. 25). |
![]() | The Browns are the worst team in the league. They're going 0-16 this season. Cleveland is doomed. | There's no defending Cleveland's 0-3 record, but it's not like the Browns have been blown out in every game. That said, the Browns could easily go 0-6 -- they have games at Baltimore, at the New York Giants and home against Cincinnati coming up. |
![]() | The defense lost the game in Oakland. Warren Sapp was a year off when he said the Steelers were old and slow. | There are legitimate concerns about the decline on defense. Let's just wait until James Harrison and Troy Polamalu return before pushing the panic button. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | The Texans are good. Seriously, if you run through their schedule, they could go undefeated. And did you see the way Matt Schaub fought his way back into the game after he took that terrible shot? He's tough as nails. | It was a good win, and there aren't a lot of holes in this team right now. But Gary Kubiak's surely not happy about how the Texans let up at the end and allowed Denver to threaten. Even the best teams don't typically coast through a season without any adversity. |
![]() | Man, this team isn't progressing as well as it seemed like. I mean losing to the Jaguars? On a big play from Blaine Gabbert? That's embarrassing. These guys ought to be ashamed of themselves during the bye. | Rest and time away can actually help a team get better -- it's healthy. The Colts took care of one bad team a week earlier with the win over the Vikings. But they aren't better than the group of teams at the bottom of the league, and they can lose to anyone at this stage. |
![]() | If they could just get that last 20 seconds in Minnesota on opening day back, they'd be 2-1 and on the heels of the Texans. Maybe it wasn't pretty but there are a lot of 1-2 teams in the league, so we're in reasonably good shape. | Well, you're right about 1-2 not being terrible given the circumstances around the league. But this is still an awfully shaky team, and its growth is very incremental. |
![]() | What an outburst! I mean, that was a game for the ages. They can find big plays. The run game and the pass defense don't have to be giant issues -- we can work around them as we get better. The Titans are resilient. The Titans are back. | Tennessee's part in an epic game was fantastic. But the Titans didn't turn on a faucet that pours out unlimited 60-yard touchdown plays. They did well to fight back from mistakes, but make those mistakes against the likes of Houston, and there won't be a follow-up feel-good story. |
