Why is Andre Carter an Oakland Raider?

Just look at the NFL sack statistics. The Raiders have three sacks in three games. It is tied with four other teams for the second fewest sacks in the season.

Oakland hopes Carter can come in and give the defense some pass-rushing heat. Carter, who is just recovered from a quad injury, had 10 sacks last season and he was named to the Pro Bowl.

He remained unsigned because of his health issues. But Oakland clearly thinks Carter is now ready to help. Carter, 33, is likely going to be a rotational player. Because of his age and his recent injury, I don’t think Oakland can overuse him. But if he improves Oakland’s pass rush on third down, then it will be a quality signing.

I’d expect Carter to play Sunday at Denver. Pass-rushers rush the passer the play book be damned. All Oakland needs to do is point out Peyton Manning and tell Carter to chase him.
