As expected, the Chiefs have ruled out Brady Quinn for Thursday’s game at San Diego. Quinn suffered a head injury early in a home loss to Oakland on Sunday. Cassel -- who Quinn replaced in the starting lineup -- took over in the 26-16 loss. Because of the short turnaround, there was little chance Quinn would be able to recover in time to play.
Thus, Cassel is back in the mix. That is not what the Chiefs wanted when they announced last week that the job was Quinn’s. Cassel fell out of favor gradually, but he lost a lot of confidence from the team and the fan base with a three-interception outing in a home blowout loss to the Chargers in Week 4.
The calls for Cassel’s removal became deafening after that game. There is little chance that Cassel can convince the team and Chiefs fans he is the long-term answer at quarterback, but he can make a case for the being the short-term answer by engineering a win at San Diego.
