Weekend mail call:

Andy from Dayton, Ohio, wants to know if I think Carson Palmer will be a Raider next year.

Bill Williamson: I do believe he will be back. He turns 33 next month and I’m not sure he is the long-term answer, but for the time being, I don’t think Oakland can do better. It has so many other needs and next year is a weak quarterback draft class. It doesn’t make sense for Oakland to look for a new quarterback for next year. I think the Palmer situation will be re-evaluated after the 2013 season.

Matthew from Moses Lake, Wash., wants to know if I think the Chargers could draft Matt Barkley to replace Philip Rivers.

BW: No, I don’t see that happening. The Chargers need to build around Rivers, not replace him. They need help at every facet of the offense. Rivers hasn’t been great, but he is not the root of the offensive problem in San Diego. He needs more talent around him.

Joe from St. Louis wants to know If I think the Chiefs, if they get the No. 1 pick, could trade it for a package of picks.

BW: I think they’d be interested in doing that. No quarterbacks seem worthy of the top pick, and the players who could be the top pick don’t fill pressing needs for the Chiefs. But because of the quarterback issue, there may not be much interest around the league for the top pick, so the value may be lower than in most years.
