Mid-week mail call:
Eric from Concord, Calif., wants to know if the Raiders could pursue St. Louis running back Steven Jackson in the offseason.
Bill Williamson: Jackson had success under new Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Plus, the Raiders could use a bigger back. So, I see the connection. But Jackson has said he is considering retirement, and he also said he’d like to end his career as a Ram. So, I think that talk is premature. Now, if Jackson does become free and he wants to play elsewhere, I think it can be a real possibility in Oakland.
Devin from San Diego wants to know if new San Diego coach Mike McCoy could bring in Tim Tebow this offseason.
BW: I can see why you are asking, because no coach got more out of Tebow in the NFL than McCoy. McCoy probably sees value. But he was also on the staff that pushed to move away from Tebow. I don’t see Tebow coming to San Diego really helping the cause at this time. The Chargers have to fully concentrate on improving the offense and getting quarterback Philip Rivers out of a two-year slump. I don’t see where adding Tebow helps.
BW: I can see maybe Myers, but not Wheeler. The franchise tag is reserved for top players because of the financial commitment. In retrospect, there are questions around the league whether safety Tyvon Branch (who ended up signing an extension) was worth the tag. Myers and Wheeler are good players, but the Raiders have a lot to work to do, and franchising a player takes a chunk of the salary cap. Oakland would be better off getting creative and signing both players to long-term deals.
