The San Diego Chargers placed backup linebacker and special teams ace Antwan Applewhite on the injured reserve Tuesday. He has been out with a hamstring injury since the season opener at Oakland.

The Chargers signed cornerback Dante Hughes to replace Applewhite. Hughes was a third-round pick of the Colts in 2007. The Colts cut him in September. The Chargers have been interested in upgrading their secondary for weeks. They did not make a trade by the Tuesday deadline, even though the team was interested in making a move.
