The Chiefs replaced third-year defensive lineman Tank Tyler, who was traded to Carolina on Monday, with 32-year-old defensive tackle Kenny Smith.
He hasn’t played in an NFL game in six years. Smith was last with New England, where he was with Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli, in 2007 and 2008. But he never played in a regular season game because of injuries. Smith was with Oakland in 2005, but was released due to injures. He didn’t play in 2006 and was signed with Tampa Bay in 2007. But he never played a game for the Buccaneers.
Smith was a third round pick in 2001 of New Orleans. He started 15 games in 2003 and was injured the entire 2004 season.
So, this is a curious signing. But clearly Pioli sees talent in Smith. Don’t expect much from this bottom-of-the-roster addition.
