Weekend mail call:
Big J from Sac, CA wants to know if I think Kansas City coach Todd Haley is too hard on his players.
Bill Williamson: Dwayne Bowe, Derrick Johnson and Jarrad Page, who are considered among the Chiefs’ best players, have had to deal with demotions at some point this year under Haley. Haley doesn’t play favorites and he means business. If he doesn’t think a player is playing up to his potential, he will bench him. This has to be a major culture shock for Kansas City’s players who were used to the relaxed demeanor of former coach Herm Edwards. But this is the way Haley thinks he needs to be as he tries to turn Kansas City into the winner. The Chiefs’ players may not always like it, but they have no choice but to accept it.
Enrique Alvardo from San Diego wants to know what Norv Turner’s job security is like in San Diego.
BW: If Turner can continue his San Diego trend of leading his team late in the season, he should be fine. But if the Chargers, 2-3, continue to struggle and they don’t catch Denver, Turner may be in trouble. Let’s just say this: If Denver wins the division and San Diego finishes 9-7 or worse and doesn’t earn a wildcard berth, I’d think Turner could be in trouble. A lot was expected from this team this year. If the Chargers flounder, the coach could pay, which is usually the case around the league.
Chris McLaughlin from Palmdale, CA wants to know if tight end Tony Scheffler will continue to be a workhorse for Denver.
BW: Scheffler was the man for Denver’s offense last week against San Diego. He had six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Will it continue? Yes, probably at some point. New Denver coach Josh McDaniels has made it very clear that he will spread around the ball. In Week 5 against New England, receiver Eddie Royal had 10 catches. In week 6, Royal had no catches. McDaniels adjusts his scheme to the opponent. If he believes he can exploit a defense with Scheffler, he will. If not, he won’t. It’s simple as that.
