WR Swope makes sense for Chargers

I usually don’t get too worked up about pre-draft visits.

Every NFL team does its due dilligence and meets with many, many college players -- it’s just part of the process. However, once in a while, a visit sticks out. Such is the case with the Chargers' reported meeting with Texas A&M receiver Ryan Swope: It makes sense.

Swope has been considered a fourth- or fifth-round prospect. He was highly productive in college and has good hands. He helped his cause with a blazing-fast time in the 40-yard dash at the combine. Because of his ability and production, he could potentially become a third-round pick.

I think he’d fit in well with the Chargers. They need a receiver, and a player of Swope’s skill set would greatly help. With other pressing needs, taking Swope in the middle rounds makes sense for San Diego.

New coach Mike McCoy has long taken advantage of slot receivers as an offensive coordinator. New San Diego general manager Tom Telesco was part of the group in Indianapolis that took receiver T.Y. Hilton in the third round last year. Hilton made a huge impact as a rookie.

Telesco may be envisioning Swope making a similar impact for him in San Diego.
