Chiefs move closer to dealing Albert

4/18/2013

The Branden Albert talks appear to be taking the next step.

ESPN’s John Clayton reports the Chiefs have given Miami permission to talk to Albert, who lives in Miami. He is soon expected to take a physical. The teams have been talking for several weeks.

At this point, I’d be surprised if a deal is not made. The Dolphins have two second-round picks, No. 42 and No. 54. The Dolphins might be reluctant to give Kansas City the No. 42 pick. While the Chiefs want that pick, I doubt the issue will hold up the trade. The Chiefs want to make up for the lost second-round pick (34) given up in the trade with San Francisco for quarterback Alex Smith.

The loss of Albert would most certainly pave the way for the Chiefs to take a left tackle with the No. 1 pick. Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel seems likely the likely choice by Kansas City. The team is also considering Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher. Joeckel is considered a better overall player by most scouts, and the fact that he played against a higher level of competition than Fisher weighs in his favor.

Again, these moves have been in the works for awhile, and it seems like finality could come before the draft.
