Reports have linked the Oakland Raiders with Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden over the past couple of days after he visited the Raiders last week.
Now Hayden will be making Oakland his home.
The Raiders took the Houston cornerback Thursday with the 12th pick in the draft. Earlier, the Raiders sent the No. 3 overall pick to Miami for the No. 12 and No. 42 selections.
Hayden, expected to go later in the draft, will surely have a major role in Oakland right away. The Raiders signed Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins to one-year deals. They are capable NFL players, but both were buried on their former teams' depth charts last season. They will play, but the focus will be on Hayden.
There is some risk involved. Hayden suffered a torn vein in his heart during practice last season. Such injuries are most common in auto accidents and those who suffer it typically have a five percent survival rate. Still, Hayden has been cleared.
He is a fast, smart cover man. If Hayden can stay healthy, he will improve Oakland’s secondary.
