It may not make him a better quarterback, but JaMarcus Russell’s decision to take responsibility for his actions on the field was a positive step.
Russell told reporters Thursday that he did, indeed, make mistakes Sunday against the New York Jets before he was benched in the second quarter.
After the game, Russell upset many Raiders fans by having nonchalant attitude about the benching. He refused to take responsibility for his failures. Monday, Oakland coach Tom Cable broke his stance of unwavering support of Russell by detailing Russell’s issues that led to his benching. Clearly, Cable was not pleased by Russell’s attitude.
He threw two interceptions and lost a fumble prior to be replaced by backup Bruce Gradkowski. Russell will start Sunday against San Diego.
People close to the situation believe Russell needs to improve his attitude and his work ethic if he going to have a chance to be a successful NFL player. Thursday’s comments, at least, show he is willing to take some responsibility.
