It has not taken Michael Crabtree long to show he is the best rookie receiver playing in the Bay Area.
In just his second game, Crabtree continued to overshadow Oakland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on Sunday with six catches for 81 yards against Indianapolis. Crabtree’s one-game total is better than Hewyard-Bey’s entire season despite the fact Heyward-Bey has started eight games.
Wow.
Crabtree was the near-consensus choice as the top receiver in the draft, while Heyward-Bey was considered an intriguing prospect projected to be selected late in the first round.
That all changed when the Raiders stunned the NFL by taking Heyward-Bey, a speedster from Maryland, with the No. 7 overall pick, bypassing Crabtree. The Texas Tech product went three picks later to San Francisco.
Crabtree had a long contract holdout. One of the reasons he held out was because he wanted more money than Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey received $23 million in guaranteed money, while Crabtree received $17 million in guaranteed money.
So far this season in eight starts, Heyward-Bey has five catches for 74 yards and zero touchdowns. In two starts, Crabtree has 11 catches for 137 yards and zero touchdowns.
