Weekend mail call:
Johnny from Santa Rosa, Calif., wants to know if the Chargers’ secondary will be a weakness.
Bill Williamson: Eric Weddle is a premier safety and free-agent addition Derek Cox is an underrated cornerback. They are halfway there. But otherwise, San Diego is young in the secondary and it needs players like Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist to take the next step. The Chargers are confident these players will do well, but there are concerns, especially if injuries occur.
Derek from Colorado Springs wants to know if I think the Broncos will sign a pass-rusher because of Von Miller's potential four-game suspension.
BW: The Broncos are taking a wait-and-see approach with the suspension. Miller’s appeal will be held in mid-August. The team will have resolution before its Sept. 5 regular-season opener against Baltimore. If the suspension sticks, I think Denver may browse for some help, but there isn’t much out there. Ultimately, I think the Broncos will have to grin-and-bear this situation and hope its current supporting cast can produce while Miller is out.
Bryce Parker from Fayetteville, Ark., wants to know if we should be worried about how injury prone the Chargers’ receiving group is.
BW: You are right, there are some players in this group that have dealt with injuries. Three of San Diego’s top receivers are Vincent Brown, Danario Alexander and rookie Keenan Allen. All have dealt with injuries. Brown missed all of last season with a broken ankle. But the Chargers believe they will get good production out of this group as a whole and they hope the injury bug stays away from the unit.
