There is a report that Oakland owner Al Davis is putting together information against coach Tom Cable so he can fire him with cause (so he doesn’t have to pay Cable for the rest of his contract) after the season.

Cable has been the subject of multiple physical abuse allegations.

This scenario wouldn’t be a surprise, but Cable also may be on the hot seat because of his record. The Raiders are just 6-14 under Cable, whose candidacy platform was that he would bring back stability to the organization. That clearly hasn’t happened. Unless there are major changes, Cable is a candidate to be released from his duties at the end of the year.

Also in the AFC West:
  • A Denver columnist is calling for the Broncos to start Chris Simms at Washington in the place of Kyle Orton. Yes, Orton has struggled for the past two games, both Denver losses. But there is little chance he will lose his job at this point. Perhaps down the road if Orton continues to struggle, Denver coach Josh McDaniels will consider Simms. But it would be a shock if that happened now.
  • The word around the league Wednesday afternoon is that Larry Johnson’s agent is talking to some teams, but no deal is imminent. Of course, this can change at any moment. Kansas City cut Johnson on Monday and he wasn’t claimed Tuesday. He is a free agent.
  • Denver tackle Ryan Clady and Oakland punter Shane Lechler got some love on an ESPN.com midseason All-Pro list.
  • If you missed it, here are John Clayton’s AFC West midseason grades: Broncos: A; Chargers: B-; Raiders: D and Chiefs: F. Can’t argue with those grades.
