While the football world discusses Bill Belichick’s controversial call in Indianapolis on Sunday night, Kansas City coach Todd Haley dodged criticism for a controversial decision that backfired Sunday.

Because Belichick’s call failed and New England lost and Haley’s team won despite his miscall, the first-year coach is escaping the wrath. But it was a questionable decision.

Sunday at Oakland, Haley opted to go for a first down on fourth and 1 from the Raiders’ 14-yard line late in the third quarter. The Chiefs were leading 13-10 at the time. A touchdown would have given the Chiefs a commanding lead against Oakland, which hasn’t scored more than one touchdown in its past eight games.

However, the Chiefs couldn’t convert the first down. A six-point lead at that point would have looked pretty good.

The Chiefs ended up winning, 16-10. However, Kansas City needed a last second interception deep in its own territory to preserve the win. Had Kansas City opted for the easy field goal instead of trying for the first down, the Chiefs would have had a six-point lead late in the game.

Haley has been criticized for making some questionable calls this season. After the game, he seemed to acknowledge the latest questionable decision.

“I have to be smart,” Haley said. “You can’t let the circumstances get to you too much.”
