With Oakland and Denver playing Thursday, our "Needs improvement" feature this week will focus on the Chiefs and Chargers, who meet in San Diego on Sunday:
Kansas City, running game: The Chiefs’ run offense is still a work in progress as they continue to move away from the Larry Johnson era. New starter Jamaal Charles had 58 yards on 17 carries in a 27-24 win over the Steelers. Charles has shown good breakaway speed and he has promise. But he needs to be more consistent running the ball. The Chiefs need a little more from him this week against the Chargers.
San Diego, run defense: It’s difficult to poke holes in the Chargers after their 32-3 win at Denver. But they did allow 110 yards rushing to Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter. The Chargers have a reputation for being vulnerable to the run on defense. So, it’s a work in progress as the Chargers march toward the postseason.
