This post has been on my radar for months. Really, did anyone not see this coming?
Now that it is official that Charlie Weis has been fired at Notre Dame, it is not premature to wonder if he could resurface in the AFC West next year.
Weis has strong connections in both Kansas City and Denver.
The most likely AFC West landing spot for Weis is in Kansas City. Really, it could be one of the most likely landing spots for Weis, period.
Weis was in New England with Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli and he worked with Kansas City coach Todd Haley with the Jets. Plus, the Chiefs don’t have an offensive coordinator on staff. The Chiefs will likely add an offensive coordinator in January.
Haley denied Monday that the Chiefs have already contacted Weis about the job. But don’t be surprised if that changes in the future.
You can’t argue with Weis’ success as an NFL coordinator. He could help Kansas City. Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel was drafted by New England months after Weis departed. But Cassel has been trained in Weis’ offense. The fit would be great.
Pioli has shown in his first year in Kansas City that he loves relying on his New England days as he rebuilds the Chiefs. Landing Weis would be one of his biggest New England catches.
While Kansas City has to be considered the AFC West leader to hire Weis, Denver has to be looked at as a dark horse. Weis and Denver coach Josh McDaniels worked together in New England and remain close friends. The Broncos don’t have the opening at offensive coordinator that Kansas City does, but things can be always worked out in the NFL if all parties are willing.
Still, we have to look at Kansas City first in the Weis watch.
