San Diego reserve running back and return man extraordinaire Darren Sproles has been recognized by the NFL as the AFC special teams player of the month for September.
It was well deserved. Sproles totaled 453 yards on 14 kick returns, a staggering average of 32.4 yards per return. He had a 103-yard kickoff return for a score, which brought San Diego back into the game against Denver.
He also had a long kickoff return to setup a game-winning field goal at Oakland last week late in the fourth quarter. Prior to that return, Sproles told his teammates on the sideline he had a "special return" awaiting them.
Sproles is a major weapon who also affects games as LaDainian Tomlinson's caddy at running back. Sproles joins AFC West counterpart Jay Cutler as a monthly winner. Cutler, Denver's quarterback, was named the AFC offensive player of the month.
