The talk in the press box in Denver after seeing the Chiefs' score is: "How bad in the Denver defense?"

It's a fair question.

In four games, Kansas City has scored 32 points. Against Denver last week, when the Chiefs broke a 12-game losing streak, they scored 33. However, the good vibrations are over in Kansas City.

The Chiefs are back to their pre-Denver malaise. They were destroyed on both sides of the ball today in Carolina. What can you say about this team it heads to the bye with a 1-4 record?

Quarterback Damon Huard, who did a good job of managing the game last week against Denver, struggled against the Panthers and was replaced by Tyler Thigpen late in the game.

That means the Chiefs will likely give the starting quarterback job to Brodie Croyle when the Chiefs return from the bye to host Tennessee Oct. 19. Croyle has been out since opening day when he suffered a separated right shoulder. Thus, he will be given a chance to shoot some life into this offense.

Larry Johnson, who ran for more than 300 yards in the past two weeks, was held to two yards on seven carries. All the cheer gained from playing Denver has dissipated as the Chiefs try to regroup at
