The Chargers just placed center Scott Mruczkowski on the injured reserve. He suffered a major ankle injury against Cincinnati on Sunday.

The team added veteran center Eric Ghiaciuc. He has started 42 games in the NFL. He was cut by Kansas City in training camp.

The team is hopeful standout center Nick Hardwick can play, starting Friday at Tennessee. Hardwick has been out since Week 1 with an ankle injury. Hardwick has been trouble getting back after suffering a setback.

Now, with Mruczkowski – was performed very well as Hardwick’s replacement -- out, the need for Hardwick to return has intensified. Hardwick practiced fully Tuesday for the Chargers, who are playing on a short week.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman (foot) and defensive end Jacques Cesaire (elbow) did not practice Tuesday for San Diego.
