We are going to look at the best and the most disappointing rookies in 2009 from the AFC West. We’ll start with the best rookies in the class.
1. Louis Vasquez, guard, San Diego, third round: Vasquez was an excellent addition to San Diego’s offensive line. The Texas Tech product is rugged, smart and confident. He is a top-flight pass protector.
2. Louis Murphy, receiver, Oakland, fourth round: Murphy has the making of an outstanding player. He dropped way too many passes, though, and he has some growing to do. But in a couple of years, Murphy, who had 34 catches as a rookie, could be one of the better receivers in the division.
3. Ryan Succop, kicker, Kansas City, seventh round: The Chiefs may have found their kicker for the next 12-15 years. Succop made 25 of 29 field goals. His longest field goal was from 53 yards. Not bad for the final pick of the draft.
4. Knowshon Moreno, running back, Denver, first round: Moreno’s production slipped toward the end of the season. He was very ineffective down the stretch. He finished 947 yards and needs to show more explosiveness in his second season. He had just two runs of 20 yards or more as a rookie.
5. Matt Shaughnessy, defensive end, Oakland, third round: The Raiders are excited about this player. He made great strides as the season went along. He looks like a keeper.
