Marshall deal could benefit Jackson

By Bill Williamson

ESPN’s Adam Schefter just made an excellent point.

Vincent Jackson is going to get paid sooner or later.

Shortly after being traded from Denver to Miami on Wednesday, receiver Brandon Marshall agreed to a four-year, $47.5 million contract extension that includes $24 million in guaranteed money, according to a league source. The deal includes close to $29 million in the first three years of the contract and makes Marshall the highest-paid receiver in NFL history. Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald previously had the richest deal of any receiver, averaging $10 million per season.

Jackson is a restricted free agent for the Chargers. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent next year. Whether it’s the Chargers or another team, Jackson is going to get paid in the same range as Marshall at some point in the next year.

Jackson has become one of the best receivers in football. He will likely face a short league suspension for drunken-driving issues in 2010. But if he stays out of trouble in 2010, Jackson will cash in.

For that, he can thank Marshall.
