Chiefs bypass ND stars for McCluster
By Bill Williamson
A day after hitting a home run with safety Eric Berry at No. 5, the Chiefs raised some eyebrows Friday when they took Mississippi running back/receiver/return man Dexter McCluster.
The Chiefs bypassed Notre Dame stars Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate to take McCluster. Both of those players played for new Kansas City offensive coordinator Charlie Weis in college.
It wouldn’t have been a surprise if the Chiefs would have taken either player.
The Chiefs have a bigger need for a true receiver than a scat back especially with Jamaal Charles in the backfield. But McCluster is a big weapon and he will help in the return game.
Kansas City had an interest in Darren Sproles before he was giving the high tender by San Diego. McCluster fills that role.
Still, Weis will be questioned for passing on his former college stars.
