Sifting through 2010 expectations

ESPN.com has some interesting projections that involve the AFC West.

John Clayton takes a look at the five rookies he expects to break out. They include San Diego first-round pick Ryan Mathews, a running back, and Oakland top pick, linebacker Rolando McClain.

I agree. I expect Mathews, the No. 12 overall pick, and McClain, the No. 8 overall pick, to shine right away and both teams need them desperately. Mathews and McClain will be unleashed and should be candidates for offensive and defensive rookie of the year.

Also, Jeffri Chadiha looks at offseason moves that will and will not work. Three of the moves that Chadiha expects to fail involve the AFC West.

He doesn’t expect Jason Campbell to make a difference in Oakland. He expects former San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson to fail with the Jets and he doesn’t expect new coordinators Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis to do much in Kansas City.

I have varying thoughts on Chadiha’s projection. I think Campbell will help the Raiders, but I don’t think he will be the difference between a playoff spot and another early-season exit.

I totally agree on the Tomlinson call. I think the great L.T. is done and he should have retired when the Chargers cut him.

I don’t agree at all on the Crennel and Weis call. These guys are true professionals and they will be a major influence on the Chiefs as they begin the transition to being a contender.
