ESPN.com's Tim Griffin is reporting that Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has taken his name out of the mix for consideration for the Denver Broncos job.
This is no surprise. I expected Stoops to make a call on whether he was interested in jumping to Denver and the NFL early in the week leading up to Thursday's national title game. The last thing Stoops wanted was a distraction.
He closed the door.
Of course, Stoops could get back in the game after his Sooners play Thursday. But for now, it looks like Denver will be looking at other options.
Stoops was a wild card anyway. Bowlen has long been fascinated by Stoops as Oklahoma alum. Now, Bowlen can go back to concentrating on NFL assistants.
The process begins Saturday night. Bowlen and top executive Joe Ellis are meeting with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Other candidates include Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
