He was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team Tuesday. He replaces the injured Kevin Mawae of Tennessee. Wiegmann was the first alternate.
It was an unlikely ride for Wiegmann to the Pro Bowl. He nearly retired before last season because he didn't have any options. Denver signed him to a modest contract prior to the season as insurance in case longtime star center Tom Nalen was hurt.
Nalen ended up missing the entire season with a knee injury. Wiegmann took over and he was a standout all season, anchoring a strong offensive line. Nalen is expected to retire so Wiegmann is in Denver's future plans.
He has discussed retiring but there have been recent indications that Wiegmann would be interested in returning as well. Wiegmann joins Denver teammates Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall in the Pro Bowl.
