Coaching reunion in Denver

By Bill Williamson

Denver coach Josh McDaniels is familiar with first-year offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. The group worked together in New England.

McDaniels said there is a fundamental familiarity, but he is sure the Chiefs have mixed some things up since Weis and Crennel were in New England. The Chiefs and Broncos meet Sunday in Denver for the first time this season.

“When I look at what they’re doing on film, I’m very familiar with it,” McDaniels told reporters in Denver on Wednesday. I understand and am probably very aware of what the call is and what they’re actually trying to accomplish on some of those things. They’ve tweaked and changed things like we all do, so there’s certainly plenty that I’m not familiar with, but I do have an awareness of both of those coaches. I know they’re going to be extremely well prepared. I know we’re going to see some things that we’ve never seen before and that’s part of the game, that’s what’s made them as good as what they are. I think with those two, the addition of Charlie and Romeo and what they do in the kicking game affects everybody. As I mentioned yesterday, this is probably the most complimentary football team that we have played, and I think that stems from the coaches.”
