Evening AFC West notes
By Bill Williamson
AFC East blogger Tim Graham suggests that it is “remote” that the New York Jets will sign Oakland Raiders’ free-agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
I know a lot of people would love to see an Asomugha-Darrelle Revis tandem. But that would be awfully difficult to financially maneuver.
Even if the Jets don’t come calling, plenty of teams will pursue Asomugha. Still, don’t count Oakland out of the Asomugha sweepstakes. Perhaps the longer the lockout goes, the better the Raiders’ chances of keeping Asomugha become.
It could be difficult for many free agents to leave for a new team if the lockout ends shortly before the regular season for personal reasons and it could be a factor in a player staying put if the terms are similar.
- Meanwhile, Sunday, we looked at the possibility of Dallas-area native Michael Huff signing with Dallas as a free agent. The Oakland safety played it cool and didn’t tip his hand. Yet, now there’s a report that Huff is working out with some Cowboys players, wearing Cowboys’ shorts. What does it mean? Maybe his Raiders shorts are dirty.
- The San Diego Union Tribune thinks the Chargers could look at an offensive lineman at No. 18 if a pass-rusher is not available. Yet, there should be many top pass-rushers available. The paper is linking Missouri pass-rusher Aldon Smith to San Diego with the pick. I do expect Smith to be on San Diego’s short list of candidates.
