Around the AFC West: Gailey to call plays

Denver

The Broncos' two first-round picks, Knowshon Moreno and Robert Ayers, did not practice in the first day of camp.

My take: This is not a major issue yet. Only a handful of first-round picks have signed, so this may take a little time. It is too early to think either one of these players is going to have a prolonged holdout. If both Moreno and Ayers report by the weekend -- Denver's full squad starts camp Friday -- they should be fine.

Kansas City

New coach Todd Haley has decided that offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will call the plays to start the season.

My take: This is the usual tact head coaches take, letting the coordinator call the plays. Haley called the plays in Arizona and his head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, was an offensive-minded coach as well. Usually head coaches reserve the right to call the plays in pivotal situations, like in the 2-minute drill or on fourth down. Don't worry, Chiefs fans, Haley and his innovative offensive ways will have a major impact on the offense.

Oakland

Here's another view connecting Michael Vick to the Raiders.

My take: I just don't buy it. Yes, he fits an Oakland profile, but that doesn't mean the Raiders need to go that route. Vick could help the Raiders in the Wildcat offense, but I am not sure it is worth everything else that comes with signing Vick.

San Diego

Sixth-round pick Kevin Ellison was a no-show for the first day of the Chargers' rookie camp.

My take: If Ellison misses a day or two, this is no big deal. The full squad doesn't report until later in the week. But if this extends more than a day or two, it is not good. Ellison is a sixth-round pick and doesn't have much leverage. Sixth-round picks don't hold out. Chargers coach Norv Turner has already expressed disappointment in Ellison missing one day. The Chargers love the hard-hitting safety and he has a chance to start if he has a great camp. Missing more time will make that difficult.
