NAPA, Calif. -- I just got back from the Raiders' first training camp practice. I wanted to put out some quick updates around the AFC West before writing some observations from the Raiders camp.
First of all, Oakland first-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey was not on the practice field in the morning session. There were several reports Thursday morning that the No. 7 overall pick agreed to terms. After the practice, Oakland coach Tom Cable would not confirm those reports. He did say "progress" was made in the talks.
When Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell was told of the reports after practice, he said it was the first he had heard of it. But Russell was all for it. He missed his entire rookie training camp because of a holdup in contract negotiations. He said Thursday it was a "setback."
Perhaps Heyward-Bey will be on the field for the afternoon session Thursday, which begins at 4:20 p.m. PT.
Meanwhile, Kansas City signed fourth-round pick Donald Washington. He is a cornerback from Ohio State. Kansas City's lone remaining draft choice is No. 3 overall pick Tyson Jackson.
Denver canceled Thursday's practice, which was going to be the last of a short rookie camp. The team's full-squad camp begins Friday.
